Allow (more) laughter & joy

Running your business can seem daunting at times, and it’s easy to fall into the routine, even drudgery of the same things being done. It can be easy to create ‘seriousness’ around the business. That can pull us into just doing, without full appreciation, or worse — enjoyment.

Build a business that allows you to experience laughter and joy every day.

If you are anything like the speakers, authors and coaches we work with, you started this business in order to provide something wonderful in the world that only you can provide; but you also set out to build a business that works On Your Terms™, one that gives to you and gives back tenfold.

A huge part of that is to follow the flow and the feeling of joy that comes from doing something ‘on track’. One of the best indicators that you are ‘on track’ is making sure there is laughter, or at least lightness in all you are doing. Laughter makes it all the easier to create the results you want.

So, let’s just ask: when was the last time you laughed, or fully appreciated something or someone in your business? Was it in celebration of a result? Was it the joy of creating something new or fixing something that just wasn’t working? Was it in a funny exchange or light relief with a co-worker or supplier?

Laughter can also wake us up to what we need to do more of.

Laughter is a brilliant release. It can ease us into a more calm and relaxed state. You can also use it as an indicator in your business — are you on track to building a business that you love, in which you can do what you love. When you are doing that, laughter comes easily.

Here’s what to do next.

Don’t not do this. Take ten minutes out, right now. Make a little list of all the activities and people that make you laugh in and about your business today. Let’s call it an appreciation list. It’s really also the start of your values and culture list.

On the days when it feels a little dreary, get out the list, choose one of those and reach out for some laughter to make everything work more smoothly. The real objective is of course to ensure that everyone is doing exactly what makes them laugh or at least be in flow. That’s going to build your business faster than anything else.
