Nancy and I have been married 26 years this year and have worked together for 27 years. She was my music booking agent before we got married. She booked me on gigs around the world on tour including Japan, the Hague, the UAE and many other countries.
In my previous life, I was a career jazz pianist. We had a great run! We lived the dream so to speak. BUT, it was just after 9/11 that I had to face the reality that I had to reinvent myself, my life, and find a new way to make a living.
Why? Because 9/11 was the final nail in the piano so to speak. With years of practicing and performance, I had body pain in the form of severe tendonitis in my arms – I had worn out the tendons in my arms. With that stress, I suffered from emotional pain. This was compounded with suffering from severe tinnitus in my ears and head. I think the universe was literally screaming at me…it was time to change my life.
I was hanging in there though. But it was on the day of 9/11 I knew the good fight was over. The independent music label I was signed to in New York, well, it was closed for months. We all know what that means for businesses to be closed for months. That indie label wasn’t immune to the consequences of a shut down. My label support was now also gone. And so, for those of you who are living uncertainty right now, I know what loss and uncertainty feels like. I remember it like it was yesterday.
Healing my life, meant I had to heal my body and heal my mind. I had to change the way I did things. I had to change my life. Fortunately, I was an early adopter of the internet. Google was born the same year as my son, in 1997. I actively sought out teachers/coaches and mentors that could teach me about internet marketing. I did lots of online learning. Soon, I was selling piano lessons and downloadable sheet music and by 2001 I was earning a good living from that.
It was a skill I honed, and I was very good at it. I also attended professional and personal development courses. Eventually, I became a certified trainer, and became very seasoned in my field. I began helping others, and this felt like I was finally in alignment with what I was meant to do, who I was meant to be. In 2004, we incorporated Training Business Pros and have since trained thousands of businesses throughout North America.
In the last 16 years we hit a few milestones.
- We won a few industry awards
- In addition to our training company, we launched a marketing agency
- We were invited to speak at several conferences throughout North America. I also shared the stage with famous authors like Brian Tracy, and David Chilton (the Wealthy Barber)
- Our studio has live streamed to conferences around the world
- My son and I walked the famous pilgrimage together on the Road to Santiago
- We helped our son launch his Tech Start UP which is now a multi award winning company with 2700 clients world wide in under 3 years.
- We helped some of our clients dramatically increase their sales in the millions, rewarding us with a great lifestyle.
- My wife Nancy appeared on one of the most watched shows on Dr. Phil
- AND in 2018, my dream came true. I finally did get to Carnegie Hall to a standing ovation. But that’s a completely different story that includes Bob Proctor and the authors of the Secret 🙂
