Personal Bio:

Who I am:

I am a dance artist, movement director, public speaker and university lecturer. I am also a keen researcher. My current areas of interest and expertise are the application of dance and movement in health conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, mild to moderate mental health conditions, fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and ME. My dance specialisms are in Afro-Brazilian Dance and celebratory dances around the world, including Bollywood as well as mass movement direction and choreography for theatre. I am interested in the history, stylistic qualities and current developments of the dance and movement techniques and traditions in different countries and eras, and this interest informs my work and my client’s involvement in the programmes. In the field of dance and health, I have in depth experience in devising interventions which use dance to support people with mental health issues as well as rehabilitation and neurological diagnosis.

What I do:

Through my work I aspire to inspire individuals to feel comfortable in themselves, to develop their skills and flourish. I am very interested in exploring how movement can support our bodies and minds to feel, rejuvenate and perform well, independently of our age, condition or ability, working with what we have and blossoming with it.  I believe that dance and movement can be used as an unifying factor in society and a tool to not only improve health and wellbeing but also, to enhance an individual’s ability to be involved as a citizen, and blossom in the geographical space they live in.

I devise and deliver sessions and programmes which aim to support people in their journey of discovery, whether it is to change habits or find sustainable avenues to support them in their recovery. Working in this field over the last 20 years, and in different European countries, I have seen the power of dance and movement not only to benefit health and wellbeing of the participants, but also, and particularly through the programmes of social prescription I have been delivering, the long lasting effects of the art intervention in them, their friends and families.

Now more than ever, it is essential to maintain our wellbeing to flourish, whether it is at the private or public sphere, the personal or the collective, as burn out is an obstacle in whatever path we follow. Taking care of ourselves, doing it in a fun and reflective manner, works.
